Books2Door began in 2004 as a one-man business selling second-hand books on eBay. Today it's an independent online bookshop in Leicester that sells brand-new books bought in bulk from publishers, and says it has served more than a million customers. Its speciality is box sets and multi-book collections priced well below the combined cover price.

Children's books are the heart of the range, sorted by age from baby and board books up to 9 to 14 and young adult, but there's adult fiction, non-fiction, manga and graphic novels too. It suits parents and grandparents building a home library, teachers stocking a classroom (schools can pay by purchase order), and anyone who'd like Christmas presents that aren't another screen.

What's worth a look

Six sets from the Christmas and children's ranges.

Book advent calendars are a good alternative to chocolate: the Usborne advent calendar has 24 little illustrated storybooks, including classic fairy tales, that stay on the shelf long after December. For older children, the Horrible Geography collection bundles 12 funny, illustrated titles covering volcanoes, deserts, oceans and more.

At the other end of the scale, the four-volume Harry Potter MinaLima illustrated and interactive collectors' editions make a proper keepsake present.
