Bradshaws Direct: pond kit, fish food and water features for winter

Bradshaws Direct is a water gardening specialist based in Easingwold, just north of York, and says it has been supplying pond keepers since 1979. It sells online across the UK and from its own shop, which opens 10am to 4pm seven days a week and stocks goldfish, shubunkins and koi in season (in store only). If you have a garden pond, or you're planning one, it covers most of what you'd need in one place.

The range runs from pond liners (PVC, butyl, EPDM and stone-covered, plus custom sizes) and underlay to pumps, pressurised and box filters, UV clarifiers, pond vacuums, treatments and test kits, nets, plants, fish food and water features. Brands include Oase, Hozelock, Velda and Evolution Aqua, alongside Bradshaws' own PondKraft range. The site also has free pond volume, liner and pump calculators, which help before you buy anything cut to size.

It's a practical, no-frills shop rather than a lifestyle brand, and the phone line (01904 698800) is staffed by people who can help with sizing pumps and filters, which is useful if you're building a first pond. Its blog covers seasonal jobs such as keeping leaves out over autumn and winter, dealing with blanket weed and guarding fish from herons. Some liners and electrical items can be posted outside the UK, but fish food and treatments can't.

What's worth a look

Late autumn and winter are when ponds need netting, a clean-out and a change of fish food, so here are six things from the current range.

The Oase Pondovac 4 is the bigger job: a two-chamber pond vacuum that keeps sucking while one chamber empties, and the product page says free pond gloves come with it. For the fish, Bradshaws' own wheatgerm pellets come in several sizes, with a 6kg Super Saver bag if you have a lot of fish to feed.

Current offers

We don't have any Bradshaws Direct codes in our list yet. On the store's own site:

• Free next working day delivery on orders over £50 placed before 2pm, to qualifying mainland postcodes (Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and Islands, pallet items and custom-made goods are excluded).
• Reduced prices on a number of lines, including the Oase pond vacuums and a set of Autumn Sale and clearance items. Check the product page for the current price.
• Price match: Bradshaws will match a published price from another supplier on the same new, in-stock item (not auctions or eBay).

How to save more

• Group your winter jobs into one order of £50 or more to get free next-day delivery, rather than paying £2.99 to £5.99 on several small orders.
• Look at the clearance section for end-of-line kit and short-dated fish food and treatments.
• If you're near York, free click and collect from Easingwold avoids the £40-plus pallet charge on heavy items such as large liners.
