English Online is the British Council's own paid course for adults who want to improve their English with a real teacher rather than an app alone. The British Council is the UK's international cultural and education organisation, founded in 1934 and registered as a charity. It suits people living in the UK who speak English as a second language, anyone preparing for IELTS, and friends or family abroad who'd appreciate lessons as a gift.

Classes run on credits. A 55-minute group class with up to 10 students costs one credit, and a 25-minute private class costs two. Classes run 24 hours a day, so you can fit them around work and family, and you choose the themes and level. Prices depend on the country you live in and appear when you register.

The flexible English Online course comes in three monthly plans. Silver gives one group class a week, Gold two and Platinum three, and on Gold and Platinum you can also spend credits on private classes. Every plan includes Live25 grammar and pronunciation webinars, AI speaking practice and a British Council certificate showing your CEFR level. If you need a test score, IELTS Coach is sold in credit packages such as Express (10 credits over a month) and Lite (20 credits over two months), with free listening and reading mock tests included.

If you can't commit to live classes, the Self-Study course gives you bite-sized exercises written by English experts, four Live25 webinars a month and a badge each time you finish a theme, on a 1, 6 or 12-month subscription. The Intensive Course uses the same flexible platform with more classes each week, for people who need to improve quickly before a move, a new job or university. Businesses can also arrange group courses for staff through the For Organisations section.

Current offers

We don't have any British Council codes on file yet. On the site:

• Gold and Platinum plans start with a 7-day free trial covering two group classes or one private class. You'll need to add payment details, and the plan renews at the normal price unless you cancel during the trial.
• Gold and Platinum monthly plans were showing 10% off for the first four months when we checked.

How to save more

• Take the free English level test before choosing a plan so you join classes at the right level.
• Book and cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Late cancellations and no-shows lose their credits, and unused credits expire.
• Make full use of the Live25 webinars, which are included in your plan and don't cost class credits.
