Jutoh is an e-book editor made by Anthemion Software, a small independent software company based in Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh. It's run by Julian Smart, who founded the wxWidgets programming toolkit, and Harriet Smart, a novelist who uses the company's writing tools herself. Anthemion has been selling software for writers for more than fifteen years.

It suits self-publishing authors and small publishers who want to turn a manuscript into proper Kindle and ePub files without paying someone else to format it. You can import a Word, LibreOffice, ePub, Markdown or text file, fix the styles, add a table of contents, footnotes or an index, then export files ready for Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo and other stores. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and works offline.

The big draw is the pricing model: there's no subscription and no per-book fee. You pay once, and one licence covers all your own computers, whichever operating systems they run. Prices are listed in pounds, euros and US dollars before VAT, which is added at checkout.

What's worth a look

Here's what you can buy or download from Jutoh, with prices from its buy page.

Most writers will only need the Standard Edition at £35 plus VAT, which includes the storyboard planning tool, writing exercises and the bundled book Fiction: The Facts. The Plus Edition at £70 plus VAT is aimed at publishers handling lots of books, adding scripting, HTML templates, help file output and custom checks that flag typos during proofing.

If you already own Jutoh 1 or 2, or Writer's Café 1 or 2, an upgrade to Jutoh 3 is £15 plus VAT, and Jutoh keys bought since 10 February 2020 already work with version 3.

Support comes straight from the developers by email, and there's a mailing list for users.

Current offers

We don't have any Jutoh offers from the affiliate feed yet. On its own site, members of the Alliance of Independent Authors or the Association of Independent Publishing Professionals can get 25% off, and the buy page also mentions the German Selfpublisher-Verband. The demo is free to download, and so is the 360-page guide Master Digital Publishing with Jutoh 3.

How to save more

  • Try the free demo with your own manuscript first. It's the full program, limited to 20 documents, with a "CREATED BY JUTOH" line on generated chapters.
  • Don't buy twice for different computers: the licence is per person, not per machine, so the same key works on your desktop and laptop as long as you use one at a time.
  • Upgrades within the same major version are free, so a Jutoh 3 licence gets every 3.x update.
