LKL Flooring is a family carpet business in Peterlee, County Durham, that has been selling and fitting floors locally for decades. Its laminate, luxury vinyl tiles and fitted carpets are sold from the shop, but online it does one thing: stair runners, finished by hand in its own workshop. If your hallway needs a lift and you'd like a runner with a bound or taped edge without paying for a full stair carpet, it's worth a browse.

There are two ways to buy. The ready-made collection is a set of finished runners in fixed sizes, often one-offs, that are ready to ship. The Classic and Signature collections are made to order with a taped edge, usually take up to five working days to make, and come with free samples so you can check the colour first. Matching landing pieces are available too.

What's worth a look

Here's a selection from both the ready-made and made-to-order ranges.

Aubrey is the bold one, with a black and white chevron pattern and a black bound edge, at £150 for 60cm x 7m. For something calmer, Hazel is a one-of-a-kind runner with a soft sand border at £175. If you want a made-to-order runner, Amulet in the Classic collection comes with a black herringbone border for £299.

Not sure which style suits your hall? LKL runs a personal design consultation to help you choose the carpet, border and finish, and the portfolio page shows before-and-after photos of staircases it has done. Most ready-made runners are 60cm wide and between about 5.9m and 7m long, which covers many standard staircases, but measure the width and total length of your stairs before you buy. The product pages invite you to send in your measurements and a photo so the team can check the fit. Bespoke orders usually take five to ten working days from order to delivery, because the carpet is ordered in and then taped by hand.

Current offers

• Agnes, a ready-made 60cm x 7m runner, is reduced to £99.99 from £150.
• Delivery is free on every order to UK addresses, however many runners you buy. LKL doesn't ship abroad.
• Free samples are offered on the Classic taped-edge range.
• Klarna is available at checkout if you'd rather spread the cost.

How to save more

• Measure carefully before ordering. Runners are cut to size, so wrong measurements can't be returned. The stair runner calculator and a free printable measuring guide help, and you can send LKL your measurements and a photo to check.
• Check the ready-to-ship runners first. They cost less than made-to-order pieces and some are reduced.
• If you change your mind, contact LKL straight away. Cancelling is free before production starts, but once the carpet has been ordered from the supplier there's a 50% charge.
