Loving Tan started in Brisbane in 2010, when its founder, a lawyer who'd missed her weekly spray tan, decided to make a home tan that looked like a salon one. The brand calls its formula professional-strength self-tan, made to give a deep colour in one layer, and it has a dedicated UK store that prices in pounds and ships from Kent.

It suits people who tan regularly and want a darker result than many high-street options, and anyone short of time: the Express range is designed to be rinsed off after two hours. Most products come in Medium, Dark or Ultra Dark, so it's worth picking carefully, as returns are only on unopened products and only for store credit.

What's worth a look

The 2 HR Express Self-Tanning Mousse Dark is the one the shop calls its number one global bestseller. You rinse off the guide colour after two hours and the tan keeps developing for up to 24 hours, which makes it a handy choice for the morning of a night out. If you'd rather build colour slowly, the 8 HR Deluxe Gradual lotion is shea butter-based and the brand says a tube gives seven or more applications.

Tools matter as much as the tan with this kind of product. The velour Applicator Mitt protects your hands while you blend, and the oversized Flawless Body Brush is for buffing in a streak-free finish. The vitamin C Tan Remover gel takes off old tan before you start again.

For faces, there's a choice between the 2 HR Express Face Self-Tanning Serum, made with hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5, and the 8 HR Deluxe Face Self-Tanning Cream, both in Medium or Dark. If you'd rather put a set together, the Kit Builder and the ready-made Edits let you combine a tan with the tools to apply it, though the Edits don't show a price until you've chosen what goes in them.
