MEL Science is a science subscription run by London-based MEL Science Ltd, and it has been sending kits to families since 2015. Its name is also its mission: Make Everyone Love Science. Each month a new hands-on kit arrives, and the MEL app guides children through it with video instructions. It suits parents who want screen time to involve real experiments, home-educating families, and grandparents looking for a present that keeps arriving.

You choose subjects by age: STEM for ages 5 and up, Physics for 8 and up and Chemistry for 10 and up. You can mix subjects or add more than one kit a month if you have more than one child, and you can switch, pause or cancel from your account at any time. MEL says its kits are lab-tested and that its chemistry sets meet the European standard for children's chemistry sets.

The kits are only half of it. Each subscription includes digital extras: interactive video guides in the app, augmented reality lessons that show what's happening inside an experiment, and, for Physics and Chemistry, virtual reality lessons. MEL also works with schools, after-school clubs and home-education groups, and it takes bulk orders through its School and bulk orders page. Over three million people follow MEL's experiments online, so there are plenty of examples to look at before you subscribe.

What's worth a look

Here are the subscriptions and pages to start with, with prices as shown on the site.

Younger children can start with STEM 5+, where projects include building a microscope, a spring-powered racing car and a hydraulic lift. Older children who want proper experiments can try Chemistry 10+. Its first box is a starter home lab with a flask, a macro lens and a VR headset, and later kits cover tin crystals and pH colour changes.
