Omnia: the Swedish stovetop oven for caravans, boats and campsites

The red-lidded Omnia oven bakes bread and cakes on a gas ring. Here's what its Swedish online shop sells, and what UK readers need to know first.

Omnia makes one of the more unusual bits of camping kit around: an oven with no heat source of its own. You put a stainless steel base on a hob or camping stove, sit a ring-shaped aluminium pan on top and close it with a vented red lid, and the whole thing works like a small oven. People use it for bread, cakes, gratins and lasagne in caravans, motorhomes, boats and cabins where there's a gas ring but no proper oven.

The design has been around for decades. Omnia says it has existed in its current form since at least the mid-1940s, and the lid turned red in the 1970s. Since 2006 it's been made by Koala Marketing Company in Malmö, Sweden, which runs this online shop.

One important point before you get attached: the shop prices in euros and only delivers to EU countries, sent from Sweden. UK buyers can't check out here, and Omnia names Aztec Leisure as its UK reseller instead. If you're in the EU, or heading there in a van, read on.

What's worth a look

Six picks from Omnia's shop, with euro prices as shown on its site.

The Omnia Classic Original 2L is the oven most people start with. It works on most heat sources except induction, and Omnia suggests baking a simple sponge first to learn how hot your stove runs. The newer Stovetop Pizza Oven is a separate design for small pizzas, taking about seven to eight minutes each, and it holds heat well enough to bake several in a row.

If you want a few extras in one go, the web-exclusive KIT Weekend pairs the 2L oven with a five-pack of foil dishes and a cool bag, so you can prepare meals at home and reheat them on the road. The Bake with Omnia cookbook has 45 recipes, from bread rolls to cakes, all written for the Omnia.
