Queendancer is an online occasion-wear shop that started in late 2017. Its contact address is in Suzhou, China, and it runs a UK site with prices in pounds and UK dress sizes. Most of the range is made to order, and many styles can also be made in a custom size for an extra £19.

It suits anyone shopping for a one-off big night on a budget: prom, a black-tie dinner, a wedding (as a guest, a mother of the bride, or even the bride), a graduation or a 1920s-themed party. Many dresses cost under £100, and there's a whole section for Gatsby-style flapper dresses with headpieces and gloves to match.

What's worth a look

The Sparkly Navy Mermaid Beaded Sweetheart Long Formal Dress is a classic prom or gala look, and like many of the formal dresses it comes in UK sizes 6 to 32 or a custom size. For a themed party, the 1920s dresses are among the cheapest things in the shop, with fringed flapper styles in the £40s and £50s.

There's a bridal edit too, with simple satin and chiffon wedding dresses in the £80s and £90s, which may appeal if you're planning a small or second wedding. Menswear is limited to suits, waistcoats, shirts and trousers.

There's a large accessories section as well, with 1920s headpieces, gloves, shawls, handbags, jewellery and wrist corsages, so you can put together a whole outfit in one order. Bear in mind that the business is based in China. Customs charges are described as rare, but if one is due, you pay it. How to save more

• Leave plenty of time. Dresses are tailored after you order, which the product pages put at 7 to 12 days, then standard delivery takes 8 to 12 working days (£10.88). Ordering early means you won't need express delivery at £18.88.
• Get your measurements right first. Use the size chart on each product page; custom sizes cost £19 more and can't be returned.
• Buy one item at a time if you're unsure. Returns must be started within 7 business days, you pay postage, and returning 2 to 3 items carries a 15% restocking fee (30% for 4 or more).
