Rakuten Travel Experiences is the tours and activities site of Rakuten Group, the Tokyo e-commerce company. It started life in 2011 as FindJPN, became Voyagin, was bought by Rakuten in 2015 and took its current name in December 2021. If you're planning a trip to Japan, it's a single place to book attraction tickets, workshops, tours and transport before you go, or on the day once you're there.

The site lists more than 11,000 experiences, most of them in Japan, from Hokkaido down to Okinawa, with a small number in Bali, Europe and the US. Prices are shown in Japanese yen. Each listing explains what's included, where to meet and which language it runs in, which matters because some workshops are run in Japanese only. Many bookings arrive as e-vouchers by email.

What's worth a look

Here are six Tokyo bookings that show the range, with the prices shown on each listing.

The Tokyo Skytree e-ticket (2,600 JPY on the listing) lets you book a time slot in advance and swap your voucher for a ticket at the entrance, with views over the city and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. For something more personal, the tea ceremony or kimono experience at a bonsai museum in Tokyo (6,600 JPY) takes place in a traditional Japanese house with a garden of bonsai. The Japanese "Snack" Bar Hopping Tour in Shimbashi (26,500 JPY) has a local guide take you to small neighbourhood bars for drinks, snacks and karaoke.

Beyond Tokyo, the site is strong on things that are hard to arrange from abroad: diving and snorkelling trips, many of them in Okinawa, pottery and glass workshops, cooking classes, maiko and samurai experiences, and kimono rental in Kyoto. There are practical bookings too, including rail and Shinkansen tickets, transport passes, airport transfers, pocket Wi-Fi and luggage storage, plus a filter for activities you can book for the same day.

Current offers

We don't have any voucher codes for Rakuten Travel Experiences at the moment, but several listings show savings against the price at the gate:

  • Tokyo Skytree advance tickets for up to 12.5% off the same-day price; a weekday adult reserved Tembo Deck ticket is 2,100 JPY against 2,400 JPY on site.
  • Sanrio Puroland tickets for up to 37% off the on-site adult price on selected dates.
  • Tokyo Joypolis Passport for 5,000 JPY for adults, against 5,800 JPY on site.

How to save more

  • Sign in with a Rakuten account before you book to earn Rakuten Points on each booking, and check the site's coupon section.
  • Book theme park and observation deck tickets ahead rather than at the gate, where the listings show higher on-site prices.
  • Read the cancellation terms first. Some e-tickets, such as Skytree reserved entry, can't be refunded, even in bad weather.
