The Regency Chess Company sells wooden chess sets, loose chessmen and boards from its warehouse on Commerce Park in Frome, Somerset. Everything on the site is held in stock in the UK for quick dispatch, so it suits anyone buying a proper set as a gift, a club player who wants tournament-size pieces, or someone replacing a tatty board at home. You can phone the team on weekdays if you want help matching pieces to a board.

The range runs from compact magnetic travel sets up to boards made in Spain by Rechapados Ferrer. Most sets come as a bundle of pieces, board and box, but you can also buy pieces and boards separately, which is handy if you already own one half.

The Down Head Black Championship Chess Set is a sensible place to start. You get ebonised Down Head pieces, a 16-inch sapele board and a birchwood box to keep it all in. If you'd like something with more character, The Isle Of Lewis Large Sapele Chess Set pairs Lewis-style chessmen, based on the famous medieval pieces, with a sapele board made in Spain.

For playing on the move, the Deluxe Hardwood Folding Travel 14 Inch Magnetic Chess Set has magnetic pieces and a magnetic catch, so it folds shut without the pieces rattling loose.

How to save more

• If you already have a decent board, buy pieces on their own. The Conquest Series Ebonised Chess Pieces cost far less than a full set and will upgrade the board you already have.
• Check that the king height suits your board before ordering. Each product page lists the king height, and pieces that are too big for the squares look cramped and are awkward to play with.
• Use only one code per order and compare them: WELCOME10 gives 10% on a first order, while BF15 gives 15% during the Black Friday sale.
