Schöffel Country makes clothing for people who spend their spare time outdoors in the British countryside, whether that's a day's shooting, a hack, a spot of fly fishing or a long walk with the dog. The Schöffel family business was founded in Bavaria in 1804, and its British country range began in the early 1990s, when the family teamed up with Bradshaw Taylor to make the Ptarmigan Shooting Coat, a waterproof, breathable and machine-washable alternative to the wax jacket.

Today the range covers men's and women's jackets and coats, gilets, fleeces, knitwear, shirts, trousers and accessories. It's not cheap, but it suits anyone who wants hard-wearing country clothing with proper technical fabrics, and it's well worth browsing for gifts too, with edits under £50 and under £100.

What's worth a look

These pieces from the new season stood out on the UK site.

The men's Norton Fleece at £175 is a good example of the brand's everyday layers, and the Oakham Retro Fleece Gilet at £140 is an easy gift for someone who's always outdoors. For bad weather, look at the waterproof and shooting coats, and remember that shooting garments with Dermizax membranes come with a five-year warranty and other technical pieces two years.

The site lets you shop by activity, so you can go straight to driven, walked-up or clay shooting, equestrian, fly fishing, walking or skiing, or browse by material if you're after fleece, tweed or linen.

Orders ship from a distribution centre in the Midlands by DPD, usually within two to four working days, and next-day delivery is available on orders placed before 2pm Monday to Thursday. If something doesn't fit, returns are free within 28 days as long as items are unworn with their tags on.
