Simon Carter started his label in 1985 by selling up and down Chelsea's King's Road, and cufflinks were among the first things he made. Forty years on, they're still what the brand is best known for. There are hand-painted animals, semi-precious stones, mother-of-pearl and sterling silver, alongside printed shirts, Italian silk ties and British-made socks. The business is based in Croydon and has two London shops, in Shepherd Market, Mayfair, and in Piccadilly Arcade.

It's a good place to find a gift for a man who wears a shirt to work and likes a bit of fun in the details. Orders are usually dispatched within 24 hours on working days. UK mainland express delivery is free over £60.

What's worth a look

Here are some picks from the current range, at today's prices.

We couldn't leave out the Magpie Cufflinks at £50. They're hand-painted on rhodium plate, and as the product page points out, a pair counts as two for joy. To mark the brand's 40th year there are anniversary cufflinks featuring Gervaise, Simon's imaginary greyhound. The 3D Gervaise pair is down from £50 to £30 while stocks last.

The shirts are just as playful. The Ski Posters Shirt (£165) is printed with vintage ski stamps, made in Portugal from 100% cotton and machine washable. For something smaller, the knitted silk ties are made in Italy and cost £75.

The cufflinks cover a lot of ground. There are hand-painted creatures, from a honey bee to a tree frog, and novelty designs such as a golf bag, a vintage camera and a wine bottle. For the office, there are smarter pairs in onyx, haematite and mother-of-pearl, and silver squares at £125. The shirt collection runs from seersucker and dobby weaves to all-over florals and paisleys, mostly between £135 and £185. Accessories fill the rest of the range, including pocket squares, tie slides, belts, wallets and bags, so it's easy to build a gift around one theme.
