Running out of washing powder at the worst moment is what smol is built to prevent. It's a Brighton company, set up in 2017, that posts laundry capsules, dishwasher tablets and cleaning refills through your letterbox on a schedule based on how often you use them. Its pitch is less plastic and fewer chemicals than the big supermarket brands, and it is a certified B Corp. Everything is sold online, mostly as an ongoing plan that you can change or cancel from your account.

It suits busy households who'd rather not lug heavy bottles home from the supermarket, and anyone who likes the idea of refilling one spray bottle instead of buying new plastic each time. The packs are slim cardboard boxes that fit through most letterboxes. smol does point out that the products need keeping away from children and pets, so think about whether letterbox delivery is safe in your home.

What's worth a look

Here are six starting points, from the free trials to the starter bundles.

The Most-Loved Switches Bundle is the easiest way to try a bit of everything: laundry capsules and dishwasher tablets (nine washes each), plus the multi-purpose spray and foaming handwash in reusable bottles. If you'd like your cleaning spray to smell a bit special, the Clean Reset range comes in scents such as rhubarb and pink pepper.

It helps to know how the plans work before you start. After a trial or starter pack, refills arrive on a pre-set schedule: for the laundry and dishwasher products you tell smol how often you run a load, and for the sprays and handwash you get refill tablets that you dissolve in water in the same bottle. You can bring deliveries forward, push them back or cancel them from your online account. smol also donates a wash to The Hygiene Bank charity with every laundry or dishwasher trial.

Current offers

We don't have smol codes from our affiliate feed, but these introductory offers were on smol's own site:

• A free laundry capsule trial and a free dishwasher tablet trial, each with nine washes, where you just cover the postage.
• The Most-Loved Switches Bundle for £5 instead of £9.
• The Clean Reset surface starter for £12 instead of £22.
• If a friend is already a customer, their referral link gets you the smol Friends Bundle for £15 (smol says it's worth £38), and they get £10 credit.

How to save more

• Introductory offers are only for new customers, so choose the trial or bundle you want most before you sign up.
• After the trial, refills cost £6.00 for 24 laundry capsules and £6.50 for 30 dishwasher tablets. Set the delivery frequency to match how often you actually wash so packs don't pile up.
• To stop or pause, change your plan online at least 24 hours before the next scheduled order.
