About AO.com
AO.com is the online shop of AO World plc, an electrical retailer based in Bolton. John Roberts started the business in 2000 as Appliances Online, reportedly after a friend bet him £1 that he couldn't shake up the white goods market. It took the AO.com name in 2013 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2014. It has since added AO Mobile, AO Business and the musicMagpie resale business, which it bought in December 2024.
The range covers large kitchen appliances such as washing machines, fridges, dishwashers and cookers, as well as small appliances, TVs, laptops and other consumer electronics. AO also sells mobile phones on contract and SIM-only deals, and offers AO Finance for spreading the cost of larger purchases.
AO sells online only, and most deliveries are made by its own logistics business. Services include installing new appliances and taking away old ones, and the company runs its own recycling plant in Telford for old fridges and other large appliances. Delivery runs seven days a week, with next-day slots on many lines. Paid AO Membership adds free delivery on every order, member prices and longer returns.
