About River Island
River Island is a London-based fashion retailer that is still owned by the Lewis family. Bernard Lewis started out in 1948 selling fruit and vegetables from a market stall in Notting Hill before moving into women's clothing. The chain traded as Lewis Separates and then, from 1965, as Chelsea Girl, which became known for 1960s fashion such as the mini dress. Menswear arrived in the 1980s, and the whole business took the River Island name in 1988.
It designs its collections in-house at its West London head office. The range covers womenswear, menswear, girls' and boys' clothing, shoes, bags, accessories and some beauty products, with plus-size and petite ranges and a wide denim range.
