Winter coat and boot deals this week: 20% off M&S coats, snow boots from £24.99

The cold has arrived, and so have the coat sales. We checked the websites of M&S, Trespass, Mountain Warehouse and Peacocks when we checked on 1 November. M&S has 20% off selected coats online, and outdoor shops have insulated jackets and snow boots well below their old prices. None of these offers showed an end date.

M&S: 20% off selected coats

M&S says its 20% off selected women's coats and jackets is online only. It's running the same on selected men's coats, and 20% off selected kidswear. Women's coats in the offer include:

• Thermowarmth Padded Hooded Longline Puffer Coat: £76, was £95
• Feather & Down Funnel Neck Short Puffer Jacket: £80, was £100
• Cotton Rich Faux Fur Trim Longline Parka: £76, was £95
• Pure Cotton Thermowarmth Belted Funnel Neck Coat: £56, was £70
• Faux Shearling Aviator Jacket: £48, was £60
• Single Breasted Longline Coat: £40, was £50

M&S also had 2 for £30 on selected Regatta fleeces. Delivery is free when you spend over £75.

Trespass and Mountain Warehouse

Trespass had its Womens Lightweight Insulated Jacket Ayton and Mens Lightweight Insulated Jacket Rayton at £29.99 each, down from £74.99. The Girls Padded Waterproof Jacket Ottile is £27.99 (was £62.99), and the Mens Fleece Jacket Hamish is £32.99 (was £69.99). Standard delivery is free over £50, and Click and Collect is free.

Mountain Warehouse has big cuts on snow boots:

• Ohio Womens Snow Boots: £39.99, was £79.99
• Ohio Mens Fleece Lined Snow Boots: £39.99, was £79.99
• Icey Womens Short Fleece Lined Snow Boots: £24.99, was £39.99
• Whistler Kids Adaptive Snow Boots: £26.99, was £44.99
• Arctic Thermal Extreme Mens Waterproof Snow Boots: £74.99, was £124.99

Its spend-and-save codes were marked "this weekend" when we checked, so they've probably ended. Delivery is free over £50, and it offers 60-day returns.

Peacocks: 20% off everything

Peacocks was advertising 20% off everything online and in store, with terms on its site and no end date shown. Standard delivery is free on orders over £40. It's a good bet for cheaper kids' coats and everyday boots.

Judge the price, not the "was"

Outdoor clothing often shows large reductions all season. A jacket at "£29.99, was £74.99" is only a bargain if £29.99 is a good price for what you're getting. Compare the fill, waterproof rating and hood with a similar coat at another shop, and check reviews for sizing.

Worked example: two adults and a child

Here's one way to kit out two adults and a child:

That's £158.97, against £272.97 at the was prices, a saving of £114. The M&S coat comes to £76 on its own, so you'd pay for delivery unless you collect in store or add more.

What to do now

1. Check what still fits. Children's coats from last winter may do another year.
2. Measure, and read the size guide and reviews before you order.
3. Get to the free delivery threshold with things you need, or collect in store.
4. Keep tags on until you're sure. Try coats on with a jumper underneath.
5. Buy boots for the weather you get. Fleece-lined boots are enough for most UK winters.

Questions

Will coats be cheaper on Black Friday?

Possibly, but popular sizes sell out. If your size is in stock at a price you're happy with, it's reasonable to buy now.

Can I send a coat back if it doesn't fit?

For online orders you usually have 14 days to cancel after delivery. M&S, Trespass and Mountain Warehouse set their own return windows, so check before you order.

Is the M&S deal in store?

M&S says the women's coat offer is online only.
