Beauty gift set deals this week: half-price Elvive, 20% off Body Shop sets and what 'worth' really means

Christmas beauty gift sets are on sale early this year, and some are already cut well below their full price. We checked the websites of Lookfantastic, Cult Beauty, Space NK, Charlotte Tilbury and Debenhams when we checked on 1 November. Boots and Superdrug blocked our checks this time, so we've no prices from them.

• First-order codes: 20% off at Space NK with FIRST20, and up to 15% off a first order over £25 at Cult Beauty with FIRST15.
• No end dates were shown on any of these offers.

Lookfantastic: the biggest cuts

Lookfantastic had the most real reductions. In its gift sets section, The Body Shop British Rose Essentials is £28, down from £35. The Morphe Portrait Mode 5-Piece Face Brush Set is £24, down from £30, and the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Jet Set is also £24, down from £30.

Its gifts under £25 include the L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Day & Night Set at £13.50, half its £27 price, and the This Works Choose Calm Kit at £11.20, down from £16. The White Company Winter Mini Cracker is £16, down from £20.

Lookfantastic's banner read "Last Chance: Up to 30% Off + Extra 10% Off Selected" with the code EXTRA10, which showed on the Sol de Janeiro and This Works sets. "Last chance" with no end date usually means it won't run much longer, so it may have gone by the time you read this. Lookfantastic's own Christmas crackers (Hair & Body, Cosmetics and Skincare) are £25 each, and its Beauty Advent Calendar is £120.

Charlotte Tilbury, Cult Beauty and Space NK

Charlotte Tilbury has a "Magical Savings" range. Charlotte's Award-Winning Complexion Trio is £62.30, down from £89, and the Pillow Talk Lipstick Duo is £47.20, down from £59. Its full-price sets include the Pillow Talk Everyday Icons Gift Set at £42 and the Airbrush Flawless Mini Setting Spray Kit at £30. It says its Black Friday sale is "coming soon".

At Cult Beauty, the KAYALI Vanilla Charm Set is marked 25% off at £89. Its Advent Calendar Signature Edition is £245. Space NK's own Hand Crème Trio Set is £10 and The Ordinary Soft Lip Set is £11.20. Space NK gives free UK standard delivery over £25.

Debenhams was advertising "At Least 20% Off Almost All Beauty + Extra 5%" and 20% off its own Beauty Advent Calendar, but its pages didn't show us product prices.

What "worth" means

Many gift sets carry a "worth" figure, such as Lookfantastic's crackers, each "worth over £65" and sold for £25. That figure is usually what the items would cost at full size and full price. It isn't what you'd otherwise pay, and it isn't a saving if you'd never buy those products. A was price, like the Elvive set's £27, tells you more about the deal.

Worked example: three gifts for £65.50

Say you're buying for a sister, a teenager and a dad who needs a haircare set. At Lookfantastic's prices on 1 November:

• The Body Shop British Rose Essentials: £28 (was £35)
• Morphe Portrait Mode 5-Piece Face Brush Set: £24 (was £30)
• L'Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Day & Night Set: £13.50 (was £27)

That's £65.50, against £92 at the was prices, a saving of £26.50. If EXTRA10 still worked on any of them, it would knock off a little more.

What to do now

1. Make a list with a budget for each person before you browse.
2. Compare was prices, not "worth" figures, and check the same set at two or three shops.
3. Use a first-order code if you've never shopped with Space NK or Cult Beauty, and read the minimum spend.
4. Check the returns window. Opened beauty products often can't be returned, so keep gifts sealed.
5. Don't wait for Black Friday on 27 November if a set you want is already cut. Popular sets sell out.

Questions

Are Boots and Superdrug running 3 for 2?

We couldn't check this week. If you find a 3 for 2, the cheapest item is usually the free one, so group gifts of a similar price.

Can I return a gift set bought online?

For most online orders you have 14 days to cancel after delivery under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, but sealed hygiene products lose that right once they're unsealed.

Will these sets be cheaper on Black Friday?

Possibly, but there's no guarantee and some may sell out. Buy now if the price is right for you.
