Bonfire Night deals this week: £1 hot dogs, £5 fleece throws and cheaper hot chocolate
Bonfire Night is this Thursday. We checked Morrisons and Dunelm for hot dogs, hot chocolate, glow sticks and blankets, and found a garden-party basket for four for £13.

Bonfire Night falls on Thursday 5 November this year, so this is the week to stock up on hot dogs, hot chocolate, glow sticks and something warm to sit under. We checked prices on the Morrisons and Dunelm websites when we checked on 1 November. Several food lines are cut, and Dunelm has fleece throws from £5. None of the offers below showed an end date, so they could change at any time.
At a glance
- Hot dogs: Ye Olde Oak 6 American Style Hot Dogs in Brine (560g) are £1 at Morrisons, down from £1.75.
- Hot chocolate: Cadbury Original Drinking Hot Chocolate (250g) is £2.25, was £3. Galaxy Instant Hot Chocolate (370g) is £2.75, was £4.
- Glow sticks: a 35-piece pack is £1.50 at Morrisons, about 4p each.
- Blankets: Dunelm's printed fleece throws are £5, and its Fleece Electric Throw is £24, down from £30.
- Sparklers: you must be 18 to buy adult fireworks, and registered sellers can only sell them from 15 October to 10 November.
Food for the bonfire
Morrisons has a run of Bonfire Night lines and cuts on the basics. Ye Olde Oak 6 American Style Hot Dogs in Brine are £1 (was £1.75), and the bigger Wikinger Bockwurst Style Hot Dogs (1030g) are £2.65 (was £3.15). Morrisons also tags some hot dogs and rolls with a "Hot Dog Bundle for £4" offer, including Warburtons Sliced Hotdog Rolls (6 pack, £1.45) and Morrisons The Best Brioche Hot Dog Rolls (£1.50). The search page didn't say how many items make up the bundle, so check your basket total before you pay.
For sauces, Heinz Tomato Ketchup (700g) and HP Brown Sauce (600g) are £3.90 each or two for £6. Bisto Gravy Granules (190g) are £2.25, down from £2.95, if you're doing sausages and mash. Stagg Classic Chilli Con Carne (400g) is £2, down from £2.25.
For something sweet, Joseph Dobson & Sons Bonfire Toffee (200g) is £1.50, a Yorkshire Baking Company Parkin Cake is £1.50, and red toffee apples are £1 each. Morrisons Limited Edition Sparkler Churros are £3.50. These sweets weren't reduced when we checked, but they're cheap to begin with.
Hot chocolate and marshmallows
Morrisons has cut several big names. Cadbury Original Drinking Hot Chocolate (250g) is £2.25 (was £3), Galaxy Frothy Hot Chocolate (275g) is £3 (was £4.50) and Costa Rich & Creamy Hot Chocolate (300g) is £3 (was £3.85). The cheapest tub we found was Morrisons Savers Instant Hot Chocolate Drink (400g) at £1.68.
Rocky Mountain Regular Marshmallows (150g) are £1.40, down from £1.85. If you'd rather make it properly at home, Dunelm sells a Hot Chocolate Machine for £35, though that's its normal price, not a deal.
Glow sticks and sparklers
Glow sticks are the cheap, safe option for younger children. Morrisons' 35-piece Multicolour Glow Sticks are £1.50. They're from its Halloween range, so stock may run down.
Sparklers count as fireworks. GOV.UK says registered sellers can sell fireworks for private use from 15 October to 10 November, and you can't buy adult fireworks if you're under 18. You mustn't set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, but on Bonfire Night the cut-off is midnight. Breaking the rules can mean an on-the-spot fine of £90.
Blankets and throws
Dunelm has printed fleece throws, including Woodland and Holly Leaves designs, for £5 each, and a Tassel Throw (130cm x 170cm) for £4.20, down from £6. The Teddy Bear Throw starts at £8.
For indoors afterwards, the Fleece Electric Throw (130cm x 160cm, 100W, six heat settings) is £24, down from £30. Dunelm puts its running cost at about 3p an hour. Delivery is £3.95, or free over £60, and Click & Collect is free.
Worked example: a garden party for four
Here's what a simple Bonfire Night basket costs at the prices we found:
- 6 American style hot dogs: £1 (was £1.75)
- Warburtons hot dog rolls, 6 pack: £1.45
- Heinz ketchup 700g: £3.90
- Cadbury drinking hot chocolate 250g: £2.25 (was £3)
- Rocky Mountain marshmallows 150g: £1.40 (was £1.85)
- Bonfire toffee 200g: £1.50
- 35 glow sticks: £1.50
That comes to £13, against £14.95 at the old prices, so you save £1.95. Add two £5 fleece throws from Dunelm and you're at £23 for food, light and something to sit under. You'll still need milk, onions and any sparklers.
What to do now
- Order food by Tuesday or Wednesday if you want it delivered before Thursday evening, as delivery slots fill up.
- Check the bundle in your basket before you pay, so you know the £4 hot dog deal has applied.
- Buy sparklers in person from a registered seller, and take ID, as shops may ask for it.
- Look for a local display. Many councils and clubs run organised displays, which can work out cheaper than buying your own fireworks.
- Order throws early if you want home delivery, or use free Click & Collect at Dunelm.
