With Christmas seven weeks away, toy shops have started cutting prices. We checked the websites of LEGO, Aldi, Hobbycraft and Dunelm when we checked on 1 November. The best deals are at LEGO, where some sets are up to 40% off and free gifts with purchase run until Sunday 8 November. We couldn't check prices at Argos, Smyths Toys or The Entertainer this time, as their sites blocked our checks.

At a glance

  • LEGO sale: Hogwarts Castle: Flying Lessons (76447) is £55.99, down from £69.99. The Fire Knight Mech (71846) is £87.99, down from £109.99.
  • LEGO free gifts: spend over £115 for "Build, Paint and Play!", or over £35 on Star Wars for a TIE Advanced Mini-Build. Both end on 8 November.
  • Aldi: pocket money toys arrive on Thursday 5 November, from £1.99.
  • Hobbycraft: 3 for £12 on kids' plush toys and 3 for 2 on selected kids' gifts. No end date was shown.
  • Dunelm: family games from £5.

Aldi: pocket money toys from Thursday

Aldi's "Pocket Money Playtime" Specialbuys go on sale in stores on Thursday 5 November. They include Little Town Christmas Bricks at £6.99, a ZURU Fuggler Alley Cat at £6.99, ZURU Electronic Collection toys at £5.99 and Slime/Fidget toys at £1.99.

Its Character Toys range has been on sale since 29 October, while stocks last. It includes a Monster Jam Truck for £3.99, a Diecast F1 car for £6.99, a Playmat & Vehicle for £8.99 and a Slime DIY case for £9.99. Specialbuys often sell out on the first day, so go early.

Hobbycraft and Dunelm

Hobbycraft had 3 for £12 on kids' plush toys and 3 for 2 on more than 1,100 selected kids' gifting lines, with no end date shown. Its "up to half price kids' offers" banner said it ended at midnight on Sunday 1 November, so that one has gone.

Dunelm sells simple family games at fixed prices, not reductions: a 3D Block Mania Game and a What Am I? Card Game at £5 each, and an LED Light Up Bowling Game, LED Magnetic Dartboard Game and Target Golf at £10 each.

Worked example: two LEGO sets and a free gift

Buy The Fire Knight Mech (£87.99) and Hogwarts Castle: Flying Lessons (£55.99) and you pay £143.98. At their old prices they'd cost £179.98, so you save £36. Your order is over £115, so you should also qualify for the "Build, Paint and Play!" gift if you order by 8 November, and over £50 for free delivery. Check the gift is in your basket before you pay.

Buying toys safely

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) advises checking that a seller gives a manufacturer's name and address, following age labels, and making sure button batteries sit behind a screwed-down flap. A price that's a fraction of the usual cost can be a sign of a fake. Buying from the brand or a big UK retailer cuts the risk.

What to do now

  1. Write a list with a budget for each child before you browse.
  2. Order LEGO by Sunday 8 November if you want one of the free gifts.
  3. Get to Aldi early on Thursday for the pocket money toys.
  4. Group Hobbycraft gifts so the 3 for 2 or 3 for £12 works in your favour.
  5. Check prices at two or three shops, including Argos, Smyths and The Entertainer, before you buy big items.

Questions

Should I wait for Black Friday on 27 November?

Not for popular toys. Some LEGO sets are retiring, and best sellers can run out. If the price is right now, buy now.

Can I return a toy if it's the wrong one?

For most online orders you have 14 days to cancel after delivery. Many shops give longer Christmas returns, so check their policy.

Do LEGO's gifts apply to sale sets?

The page says gifts unlock on "qualifying orders". Check the gift appears in your basket before you pay.
