Al Maya Island & Resort is on a small natural island about 9km off Abu Dhabi's western shoreline in the United Arab Emirates. You reach it by boat from a dock at Ras Al Akhdar, a trip of around 10–15 minutes, and transfers are free for resort guests. The resort has been running since 2005, and there are no roads or cars on the island, just a long private beach, a horizon pool and around 2,000 gazelles. All prices on the website are in UAE dirhams (AED). The island suits couples and families planning a few quiet days in Abu Dhabi, as well as visitors who only want a day at the beach club.

What's worth a look

For a stay, all three villa types have their own pool and step straight onto the beach. The One Bedroom Villa with Private Pool is 117m², with a courtyard, a majlis seating area and a clawfoot bath. The three-bedroom villas sleep up to six adults. Villa rates depend on your dates, so search the booking panel to see prices. For a shorter visit, the Island Escape weekday pass costs AED 200, and AED 150 of that can be spent on food and drink.

• UAE residents can get 15% off the best available rate, with kids staying free, on bed and breakfast, half board or full board.

How to save more

• Book villas on the resort's own site. It promises its best rates for direct bookings, plus early check-in or late check-out when available.
• Pick a day pass that includes credit. On the weekday Island Escape, three-quarters of the price comes back as food and drink.
• If you visit often, compare the memberships. One month for a single member is AED 750 with boat transfers, and members get 20% off food and drink and 15% off villa rates.
