Carbotti is a family leather workshop in Martina Franca, a hill town near Taranto in Puglia. Domenico Carbotti started out sweeping floors in a saddler's shop just after the war, opened his own business in 1956, and his family still cut, stitch and assemble every bag in-house. It suits anyone who wants a well-made Italian leather handbag direct from the people who make it, rather than another designer label. This year marks 70 years since the business began, and the shop is split into Timeless Icon and Everyday Elegance collections, plus an Archive of earlier designs. The website is available in Italian, English and Japanese, and you can pay by PayPal or credit card.

Carbotti ships worldwide from Italy, with prices in euros and free express delivery by FedEx or DHL. UK buyers should budget for import duty and VAT, which aren't included in the price and are paid when the parcel arrives. Many bags are made to order, which can take up to 15 working days, while the Ready to Ship section lists bags that go out the same day.

What's worth a look

These six come from Carbotti's main collection, from compact cross-bodies to roomy everyday bags.

The Elena is a medium-sized bag in palmellato calfskin, now in an updated V2 version, and it's €420 in tan or taupe. The Greta is also medium-sized and hand-cut and stitched, from €360. For something smaller, the Licia is the smallest bag in the main collection, a cross-body made to carry the essentials. If none of the colours is quite right, the bespoke service has a 3D configurator where you choose the leather, colours, interior finishes and hardware, and add an engraving. There's also the Eau de Pochette capsule, scented bags that can be paired with a 10ml travel-size fragrance of your choice, which makes an unusual gift.
