CogniFit is an online brain-training and cognitive assessment platform that has been running since 1999. It's operated by CogniFit Inc. in the United States, and as well as home users it's used by clinics, schools and research groups. For most people, though, the draw is its library of more than 60 brain games, which you can try free with an account on the website or in its iPhone and Android apps.

It suits puzzle fans who want something more varied than a daily crossword, families looking for screen time that involves a bit of thinking, and older adults who enjoy keeping their minds busy with games. The games are grouped by the skills they work on, such as memory, concentration, reasoning, perception and coordination, and CogniFit adds new ones regularly. It's a games and training service, not a medical one, so it isn't a substitute for advice from a GP.

Paid plans add personalised training programmes and full assessments with progress reports. There are monthly and annual options for individuals, with separate programmes for children, adults and people aged 65 and over, and family plans covering two to ten people. The UK version of the site shows prices in pounds. Under-16s use CogniFit with a parent on a family plan.

What's worth a look

Six of the free games, from familiar classics to CogniFit's own puzzles.

Chess, sudoku and mahjong are good starting points if you like traditional puzzles, while 3D Art Puzzle and Color Rush are CogniFit's own designs that work on spatial skills and switching between tasks.

Beyond the games, the personalised training starts with an assessment of a range of skills and then builds a programme of tasks around the results, with reports that track how your scores change over time. Families can manage several members from one account, which is how children use the service.

Current offers

We didn't find a discount code on CogniFit's UK site when we checked. The ongoing ways to pay less are the free brain games, the saving on annual plans compared with paying monthly (shown on the UK pricing page), and family plans, which discount each additional member.

How to save more

  • Play the free games for a week or two before subscribing, so you know whether you'll keep using it.
  • If two or more people at home want to train, compare a family plan with separate subscriptions.
  • CogniFit's sign-up form says a university or work email address can qualify for special discounts, so try that if you have one.
