Roamic sells travel eSIMs: digital SIM cards that give your phone mobile data abroad without swapping a plastic SIM or paying your network's roaming charges. It's run by Bytetravel S.A. near Barcelona, covers more than 190 countries, and shows prices in pounds for UK shoppers. You buy online, get a QR code by email, scan it, and your usual number stays on your main SIM for calls and texts.

It suits holidaymakers and business travellers with an eSIM-compatible phone, especially for trips outside Europe, where roaming add-ons from UK networks can get expensive. Plans are data only, from 1GB for 7 days up to 50GB for 30 days, and you can share data with a hotspot.

What's worth a look

Here are six popular eSIMs, with the starting prices shown on Roamic's UK homepage.

The Europe eSIM is worth a look if you're touring the continent, as one plan covers more than 30 countries, including Spain, France, Italy and Greece. Heading further afield, the Japan eSIM runs on networks including NTT docomo, KDDI/au and SoftBank, with 4G and 5G.

The United States eSIM uses AT&T and Verizon, and the Asia eSIM covers 19 destinations, from Thailand and Vietnam to India and South Korea, which suits a multi-stop trip. Each plan page lists the networks, speeds and validity, and every plan starts when you first use data rather than when you buy it. If you don't use an eSIM at all, it activates automatically 180 days after purchase. You can top up an active eSIM through Roamic's MyOzu platform, and support is available around the clock by live chat and email.

Current offers

  • Low starting prices: Turkey plans start from £1, and Europe, the United States, Japan, Morocco and Egypt from £2, on the UK homepage.
  • Refund if unused: if an eSIM bought on roamic.com goes unused, Roamic will refund it within six months, so it's low-risk to buy before a trip that might change.

How to save more

  • Check your phone on the compatibility page first. Refunds for incompatible or locked phones need proof and an unscanned QR code.
  • Buy only the data you'll use. Plans can be topped up while the eSIM is active, so a smaller plan plus a top-up can cost less than a large plan you don't finish.
  • Read the small print on "unlimited" plans: you get 3GB a day at full speed, then 1Mbps until the next day. A fixed 10GB or 20GB plan may suit heavy users better.
  • For trips that cross borders, compare a regional plan with two single-country plans. The Europe eSIM covers more than 30 countries, so one plan can be cheaper than buying several.
