VipLounges lets you book a single visit to an airport lounge without a membership or a premium ticket. It's run by Bytetravel S.A., based near Barcelona, and lists more than 1,800 lounges in 147 countries. You can show prices in pounds, and each listing sets out the terminal, how to find the lounge, opening hours, facilities and how long you can stay.

It suits occasional flyers who want somewhere quieter to wait before a holiday or a long-haul flight, and families checking whether children can get in. For UK departures, the main choice is at Heathrow and Gatwick, with independent lounges from Plaza Premium, Club Aspire, No1, Clubrooms and My Lounge. Abroad, it covers hubs such as Dubai, Singapore, New York JFK and Madrid, which is handy for the return leg.

What's worth a look

Here are six London lounges and their lead-in prices per adult on the site today (prices vary by date).

At Heathrow Terminal 5, Club Aspire starts at £47.30. It allows up to three hours before departure, and the listing mentions a British-inspired menu, work areas and smart-casual dress. At Gatwick, My Lounge in the North Terminal was one of the cheapest options at £39.50.

Each lounge page explains where to find it, for example airside next to Gate A7 for Plaza Premium in Terminal 5, plus its opening hours and facilities such as Wi-Fi, soft drinks, air conditioning and, in some cases, showers. A few listings at Heathrow are landside, including The Globe Pub & Kitchen at Terminal 5, which is handy if you're meeting someone before security. Rules differ between lounges. Some let under-twos in free, alcohol is for over-18s only, and some have dress codes, so check the listing before you book.

How to save more

• Compare terminals and lounges before booking. At Heathrow, prices ranged from £34 to £49.10 for a standard visit when we looked.
• Check the currency at checkout. The site converts prices to pounds, but says the currency you pay in can vary by booking.
• Look up your return airport too. The site lists lounges in places like Dubai, Singapore, New York JFK and Madrid, so you can book both ends of the trip from one account.
