Collective is a small UK insurer set up for people whose kit matters to them: photographers, musicians, students and working pros. Its point is simple. Standard home contents policies often have low limits for single items and little cover once your camera bag or guitar case leaves the house, and Collective was built to fill that gap. Cover starts from £4.08 a month and goes up to £50,000 of equipment, with the price depending on your kit list and the options you pick.

Policies are arranged by Collective Cover Ltd, an appointed representative of an FCA-authorised firm, and underwritten by Great American International Insurance (UK) Ltd. There's a UK-based claims team on 020 4621 7674, and Collective says accepted claims are paid within five working days.

What's worth a look

Collective keeps things tight, with two policies live today and jewellery and collectibles cover listed as coming soon.

Photography Insurance covers camera bodies, lenses and lighting against theft and accidental damage, whether you're at home, on location or shooting in a locked car's boot between jobs. Music Insurance does the same for instruments, DJ gear and studio kit, on stage, on the bus or on holiday.

Both policies come in four levels (Students, Enthusiasts, Semi-Professional and Professional) and share the same core cover:

  • Theft, at home or on the move
  • Accidental damage, at home or away
  • Unattended vehicle cover, if the car is locked and the kit is out of sight
  • Worldwide cover for 30 days, with the option to extend to 365
  • Equipment on loan to friends and family, for up to 30 days
  • Replacement hire and optional mechanical breakdown cover on paid policies

The standard excess is 5% of the item's value, with a £50 minimum and £500 maximum. You can add a voluntary excess on top to bring the premium down.

Current offers

Collective takes 10% off photography and music insurance when you quote online. The discount applies to new policies bought through its online quote journey, and the from-£4.08-a-month price on the site already has it included. A quote takes around three minutes.

How to save more

  • Get your values right. Collective asks you to insure each item at its full retail price from a credible UK retailer. Over-insuring costs more each month, and under-insuring leaves you short if you claim.
  • Think about a voluntary excess. If you rarely claim, a higher voluntary excess on top of the standard 5% brings the premium down.
  • Only extend worldwide cover if you need it. 30 days abroad is included. Pay to extend it to 365 days only if you tour or shoot overseas a lot.
