Dollar Car Rental is the budget brand in the Hertz family. It started in the US in 1965 and its UK site books cars at airports and city branches here and across Europe. It suits anyone who wants a no-frills hire car for a UK trip, a business visit or a week in the sun, and who's happy to pick from a car group ('Kia Picanto or similar') rather than a specific model.

In the UK, Dollar lists desks at London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City, plus Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow and both Belfast airports, as well as city branches such as Edinburgh Haymarket. Abroad, the UK site covers France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands. You can pay online or pay at the desk, and prices show in pounds.

If you're flying into Scotland, the Edinburgh Airport desk is in the car rental centre at 175 Jubilee Road, a short walk along the covered walkway from Terminal 1. It's open 07:00 to 23:00 and rents vans as well as cars. For city driving, the mini group (Kia Picanto, Fiat 500 or similar) is the easiest to park.

The fleet is sorted into groups rather than exact models. Minis suit solo travellers and couples, compacts and economy cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris or Vauxhall Corsa give a bit more room, and intermediates like the Vauxhall Astra or Kia Ceed suit families with luggage. Dollar also lists SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai and Vauxhall Mokka, and electric cars such as the Polestar 2 (see its EV hire page). If the model you booked isn't available, you get an equivalent car from the same group.

For a winter-sun trip, the European desks are handy. Nice Airport's desk is just outside the terminal, which puts Cannes, Monaco and Menton within easy reach, and Palma de Mallorca is a good base for the island's beaches and the Tramuntana mountains.

Current offers

We don't have any Dollar codes in our list right now. Dollar runs seasonal deals on its Special Offers page, usually as a CDP code you type into the booking form. They come with blackout dates and limits on which car groups and locations count, so read the small print before you book.

How to save more

• Choose pay at location if your plans might change: you can cancel free until the day of collection. Prepaid bookings must be cancelled by midnight two days before pick-up for a full refund.
• Bring the car back full. Cars go out with a full tank, and you'll pay a refuelling charge if it comes back short. If you buy fuel at the desk, unused fuel isn't refunded.
• Check the driver rules first. In most places the driver must be 25 or over and have held a licence for at least a year, and younger drivers pay a surcharge. You'll also need a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.
