Gabicci has been making men's knitwear since 1973, and for a lot of people the name still means one thing: the knitted three-button polo. The brand was picked up by Mods, Northern Soul fans, Rude Boys and the Acid Jazz crowd, and it has worn that history well. Today it sells online from Knutsford in Cheshire, and the shop splits neatly into two ranges.

Gabicci Vintage is the slimmer, more tailored line, with button-through knit polos, cardigans, turtle necks and printed shirts. Gabicci Heritage is cut roomier and leans towards jackets, sweats and everyday knits. If you like a retro look without dressing in fancy dress, or you're buying for someone who already owns a drawer of polos, it's a good place to start.

The details are what keep people coming back. Gabicci has always made a fuss of buttons, linings and fabric, and the knits we looked at use cotton, acrylic and viscose blends rather than heavy wool, so they work for layering through autumn and on milder winter days. Alongside the knitwear you'll find corduroy trousers, chinos, printed short-sleeve shirts, lightweight jackets and accessories such as knitted gloves. Orders ship from Cheshire, with standard UK delivery taking two to five working days and a faster Tracked 24 service for a little more. Gabicci doesn't have its own shops, but it sells through stockists, and the customer team will point you to your nearest one.

What's worth a look

Here's a mix of new-season autumn pieces and one sale find.

The Eddie button-through knit polo is a good example of what Gabicci does well: a long-sleeve knit that can stand in for a jumper, or go under a jacket for something smarter. For a sale buy, the Hunter check blouson was down from £135 to £84.15. Remember the Vintage pieces are a slimmer fit than Heritage, so check the separate size guide for each before you order.
