Grand Hotel Villa Balbi is a four-star hotel in Sestri Levante, a seaside town on the Ligurian coast of north-west Italy. It occupies an aristocratic villa set in about a hectare of parkland, which the hotel says was built by the Doges of Genoa and later passed to the noble Balbi family in the mid-19th century. These days it has 105 rooms, a pool in the garden and its own beach club just across the promenade.

It suits couples after a slow Riviera break, families who want a pool and a beach within a few steps, and anyone planning day trips along the coast. Portofino is about 30km away and the Cinque Terre about 42km, and both are easy to reach by train or boat. Prices on the hotel's booking engine are in euros, and most UK visitors fly into Genoa or Pisa.

What's worth a look

Here are six parts of the hotel and its packages worth knowing about before you book.

The rooms and suites are split between two buildings. The Epoque suites and most Elite junior suites are in the historic villa, with period details, parquet or marble floors and refined furniture, while most Elegance, Executive and Classic rooms are in a more modern building with a plainer style. If old-world character is the point of your trip, ask for a room in the villa.

Days here tend to revolve around the pool in the park, which has sunbeds and umbrellas under old trees, and the hotel's beach club, Bagni Villa Balbi, on the seafront opposite. Breakfast is a buffet with organic produce and Ligurian focaccia, and the Il Parco restaurant serves lunch and dinner. The villa also hosts weddings and conferences, with a frescoed ballroom for up to 80 people.

Current offers

• Book early and save: book direct at least 15 days before you arrive for a discount of up to 20%. The rate includes the breakfast buffet, the pool and Wi-Fi.
• Beach Included: a stay with breakfast plus two sunbeds and a parasol at the beach club, secure parking, a welcome bottle of local wine, soft drinks in the minibar and room-service breakfast, with a room upgrade and 4pm late checkout when available.

How to save more

• Plan ahead. The early-booking discount needs at least 15 days' notice, so it's worth booking as soon as your dates are fixed.
• Price the Beach Included package against a standard room plus beach-club hire if you'll spend most days by the sea. Parking is included in that package too.
• Sestri Levante is on the coastal railway, so you can reach Portofino and the Cinque Terre by train or boat without hiring a car.
