Holiday Gems is an online tour operator based near Chester, trading since 2006 and now part of the Specialist Holidays Group. It sells flight-and-hotel packages and hotel-only stays, mostly to the sunny spots British holidaymakers know well: the Canary Islands, mainland Spain and the Balearics, Turkey, Greece, Egypt and Portugal, with long-haul trips to places like Mexico, Florida and Dubai too.

It suits people who want a straightforward beach or all-inclusive holiday at a keen price and are happy to book everything online. Package holidays are ATOL protected, travel documents arrive by email, and you can spread the cost with a low deposit and a payment plan.

What's worth a look

With winter on the way, here are six destinations from Holiday Gems' winter sun range, with the lowest per-person prices shown on each page when we looked.

The Canaries are the obvious pick for winter warmth only around four hours from the UK. Tenerife is the biggest island, with resorts suited to families and couples, while Lanzarote has volcanic scenery, whitewashed villages and resorts such as Costa Teguise. For something hotter, Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea is known for diving and snorkelling, and Cape Verde, about six hours away off the coast of West Africa, is popular for winter breaks.

Each destination page breaks prices down by hotel star rating, gives the local currency, language and flight time, and links to individual resorts, so you can narrow things down before you search for dates. Once you've booked, the Manage My Booking area is where you request changes, add airport parking or lounges, and make special requests, and your final documents, including the ATOL certificate for packages, usually arrive by email within 72 hours.

Current offers

• Low deposits from £59 per person on flight-and-hotel holidays and from £10 per person on hotel-only stays, with the balance due up to three weeks before you travel.
• The homepage advertises savings of up to 40% on selected holidays (T&Cs apply).
• Kids stay free deals on selected family hotels and dates.
• A Price Match Promise against a list of named UK holiday companies.

Holiday prices move with dates and availability, so treat the figures above as a starting point rather than a fixed price.

How to save more

• Be flexible: the search lets you look three days either side of your chosen date, which can bring the price down.
• Compare the 3-star, 4-star and 5-star pages for each destination, as the starting prices differ a lot.
• If you see the same package cheaper with one of the companies on the price match list, ask Holiday Gems to match it before you book.
