Lisbon Heritage Hotels is a small collection of four boutique hotels in the historic centre of Lisbon. Each one is in a restored old building and is owned and run by Portuguese families, so they feel quite different from chain hotels. The collection belongs to Historic Hotels of Europe and Historic Hotels Worldwide, and all four hotels hold Ecostars sustainability ratings.

The hotels suit couples on a city break, culture lovers who want to walk everywhere, and, at one of them, families and dog owners. Prices on the official website are in euros with no booking fees.

What's worth a look

Here are the four hotels, plus two ways to get more out of a stay.

Solar do Castelo is the only hotel inside the walls of St George's Castle. It's in an 18th-century palace on the site of the old royal kitchens above Alfama, with peacocks wandering the courtyards and a small museum of objects found during the restoration. For something more relaxed, Heritage Lisboa Plaza has been run by the same family since 1954. It has 94 rooms, a café serving dishes such as cod cakes with tomato rice, and room for up to two pets per room.

Book-lovers should look at As Janelas Verdes, an 18th-century townhouse with 29 rooms next to the National Museum of Ancient Art. Guests get free entry to the museum and a library honesty bar overlooking the Tagus. Heritage Avenida Liberdade has 42 individually designed rooms on the city's grand boulevard, plus a gym and a small pool.

• Use the best rate guarantee. If you book on the official site and then find a lower qualifying rate online, the hotels match it and take a further 10% off your whole stay.
• Pick your rate carefully. The Flexible Rate can be cancelled free up to 7 days before arrival and is paid at check-in. The Non-Refundable Rate is paid upfront and can't be refunded, though you can change the dates up to 5 days before arrival.
• Heritage Vouchers, from €50, can be used towards a stay at any of the four hotels and make an easy present.
