Plopsa is the theme park side of Studio 100, the Belgian company behind children's TV characters such as Maya the Bee, Bumba, Kabouter Plop and Vic the Viking. It began in 1999 when Studio 100 bought Meli Park in Adinkerke, which reopened as Plopsaland the following spring. Its flagship, Plopsaland Belgium in De Panne, sits on the coast close to the French border. That puts it within easy reach of Calais and Dunkirk for UK families crossing by ferry or Eurotunnel.

The group now runs eight parks: Plopsaland Belgium, the Plopsaqua water parks in De Panne and Hannut-Landen, Plopsa Indoor Hasselt, Plopsaland Ardennes, Plopsa Indoor Coevorden in the Netherlands, and Plopsaland Deutschland and Majaland in Germany. Next to Plopsaland Belgium is a resort with the four-star superior Plopsaland Theater Hotel, Plopsaland Village villas, Studio 100 Chalets and Plopsaland Basecamp glamping. The English-language site sells tickets, stays and annual passes, all priced in euros. It suits families with younger children who know the characters, and anyone after a short break with rides on the doorstep.

What's worth a look

Here are six shows, events and dining options from the Plopsa site, several of them for the Christmas and New Year season.

This winter Plopsaland Belgium is putting on its first Plopsa Christmas Parade as part of a new Magical Christmas event, with Studio 100 characters, dancers and festive lights. On New Year's Eve the park hosts a Family Gourmet dinner with cava, wine, beer and soft drinks included. It costs €59 for adults and €39 for children aged 4 to 11, and under-4s go free. There is also a Kids' Countdown with fireworks, so children can see in the New Year and still be in bed on time.

Further afield, Plopsa Indoor Hasselt has a Christmas show with Klus the Gnome, and Plopsaland Deutschland is staging a new Maya the Bee show, The Queen Bee's Ball.
