Senator Hotels & Resorts is a family-run Spanish hotel group based in Roquetas de Mar on the Almería coast. Its corporate site says the business has 58 years of history, and it was one of the first chains to put water slides, aquaparks and themed rooms into its hotels. Today it has hotels across Andalusia, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia and the Balearic Islands, plus a resort in the Dominican Republic.

The group suits families looking for a good-value beach holiday with pools and entertainment, and couples or city-breakers who want a comfortable four-star base. Its Playa Hoteles line covers family seafront hotels, Senator Hotels covers city and resort hotels, and Affiliated by Senator adds independent hotels. Prices on the English site are in euros.

What's worth a look

These six hotels show how much ground the group covers.

For families, Playamojácar in Mojácar has renovated rooms, a water park and splash zone with seven slides and a Premium All Inclusive option. Diver Roquetas in Roquetas de Mar adds themed family rooms, slides and an entertainment programme. Playamojácar and Senator Banús both welcome pets.

For couples, Senator Banús near Marbella has a spa, deluxe rooms and duplex penthouses, and it's now open in winter too. Senator Port Mahón faces the harbour at Mahón in Menorca, while Casa del Compositor, which opened in Jerez on 30 September, focuses on local craft and the city's sherry heritage. Further afield, Senator Puerto Plata is a Caribbean resort on a golden beach more than a kilometre long.

• Join My Senator before you book. The discount rises to 8% and then 12% as you clock up nights, and members also get money off spa circuits, parking and pet stays.
• Read the cancellation terms on each offer. The autumn promotions charge 15% of the stay if you cancel between five and three days before arrival, rising to 100% for a no-show.
• Check how you pay. Senator's cancellation policy page says payment is taken on arrival, with your card used only to guarantee the booking, which helps if you're juggling holiday costs.
