Prestige Hotel Budapest is a four-star superior hotel in a restored historic town palace in the fifth district, the centre of Pest. It opened in 2015 and has 85 rooms in a classic style, with a lobby full of Cavalli furniture and crystal chandeliers. It suits couples on a city break, business travellers and anyone who wants to walk to the sights rather than ride to them. The hotel says it is about 200 metres from the Danube and 300 metres from the Chain Bridge, with St Stephen's Basilica within walking distance, Andrássy Avenue close by and the Buda Castle district just across the river.

This is a hotel in Hungary, so rates are quoted in euros, including VAT. You can pay your bill at the hotel in forints or euros, and it takes Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

What's worth a look

The Standard rooms are 20 to 24 m² and face the quiet inner courtyard, which helps if you're a light sleeper. If you want more space, the suites run from 42 to 57 m² and can take a third guest. Every room has a Nespresso machine, a minibar, bathrobes and a turndown service. The hotel doesn't publish nightly rates on its room pages, so check the booking engine for your dates.

Downstairs, Costes Downtown, recommended by the Michelin Guide, does the buffet breakfast (6.30am to 10.30am), a weekly business lunch and dinner. It's open to non-residents too, and the hotel recommends booking ahead. Guests also get free use of the sauna and relax room (10am to 9pm) and a fitness room that's open around the clock.

How to save more

• Pick your rate carefully. Non-refundable rates are charged in full when you book. On flexible rates, stays of up to six nights can be cancelled free until 24 hours before arrival, and you pay at the hotel.
• Plan for the extras. Underground parking is €30 a night and has to be reserved, late check-out until 6pm costs €40, and pets are €25 a night. Budapest's public transport may be cheaper than parking for a short break.
• Travelling with a small child? Under-2s stay free in a cot. A child aged 6 or under can have a free extra bed, but only in an Executive room or a suite, so it can be worth booking up a category.
