Store spotlight: SailTies sailing trips, courses and logbook app

SailTies began as a free digital logbook for sailors, built by Chris and Tom, two RYA-qualified sailors in the UK. Press record when you set off and the app logs your track, crew and photos, adds up your miles into a sailor resume and lets people at home follow along. It has since added SailTies Adventures, where you can book a single berth or cabin on a skippered trip run by an independent sailing school or charter business, from a first RYA course on the Solent to an ocean passage in the Caribbean.

It suits two kinds of people: sailors who want a proper record of their time on the water, and anyone who wants to go sailing without owning a boat or rounding up a crew. Trips are sold by the berth, so booking on your own is normal. Prices are per person and shown in the operator's own currency, which may be pounds, euros or US dollars.

What's worth a look

Here's a spread of trips and courses listed at the moment, plus the paid upgrade to the app.

For a first taste, RYA Competent Crew with Nomad Sailing is five days living aboard from Gosport, from £795, and is written for complete beginners. Solo sailors who'd like some independence might prefer the Corfu & Paxos Share-a-Yacht week with Sailing Holidays: you share a Beneteau 361 with two other sailors, each with your own cabin, on a flotilla through the sheltered waters around Paxos, from £1,335. If you're building miles towards Yachtmaster, the Caribbean Offshore Challenge from St Thomas to Grenada with Sail Libra is from £5,250.

Current offers

We don't have any SailTies voucher codes in our feed right now, and we didn't find any discounts on the site itself. What we did find:

• The SailTies logbook app is free, with an unlimited logbook, live tracking and Crew Match. SailTies Plus, which adds weather, speed analysis and all-time stats, is £34.99 a year.
• Gift vouchers can be bought for any amount and used on any trip SailTies lists. You can schedule one to arrive by email on the day.

How to save more

• Check the currency before comparing prices. Some operators price in euros or dollars, so a trip that looks cheaper may not be once it's converted.
• Budget for the extras. The berth price covers the skipper, crew and running the boat, but flights, insurance and most meals ashore are usually extra. Each trip page lists what's included.
• Read the operator's cancellation terms on the trip page before you pay the deposit. SailTies says bookings are non-refundable and recommends travel insurance.
