SmartRoam: one travel eSIM from an Isle of Man network

Most travel eSIMs mean downloading a new profile for every trip. SmartRoam does it differently: you install one permanent eSIM through its app, then add data bundles when you travel. It's run by Manx Telecom Trading Limited on the Isle of Man, part of the WorldOV group. Its shop shows prices in pounds, which makes it an easy fit for UK travellers heading to Europe and beyond.

SmartRoam calls itself a licensed mobile network operator with direct agreements with networks worldwide. It says it covers more than 190 destinations, has 5G on 81 networks and doesn't throttle speeds. Bundles are sold by zone, such as Europe, Asia, America and the rest of the world. You can hold one bundle per zone at a time. A 7-day or 30-day bundle starts when you first connect in a covered country, while 365-day bundles start as soon as you buy them.

What's worth a look

SmartRoam's bundle prices load in its app and shop, so here are the pages that explain how it works and what's on offer.

Start with the eSIM download page. It walks through installing the eSIM on iPhone or Android and promotes the introductory Euro Pass. The page also says SmartRoam works in the Channel Tunnel, handy if you take the train to Paris or Brussels. The SmartRoam shop is where you choose a zone bundle, with a currency selector set to GBP.

If you want the background, the About page explains what SmartRoam means by "the MNO difference". The blog post on the end of the "eSIM Wild West" covers why some countries have started blocking unlicensed eSIM apps.

Current offers

• Introductory Euro Pass: try SmartRoam with 1GB of data for a penny, bought in the app. Check the coverage and validity shown in the app before you buy.
• We didn't find any discount codes on SmartRoam's own pages.

How to save more

• If you're visiting several countries in one zone, one zone bundle covers them all, so you don't need a bundle for each country.
• Install the eSIM before you leave, but only switch it on for data when you land. A 7-day or 30-day bundle starts on your first connection in a covered country, so this stops it starting early.
• Turn off data roaming and automatic data switching on your UK SIM, so your home network can't add roaming charges.

Unused 3-day and 7-day bundles stay valid for 30 days, and 30-day bundles for 60 days. Consumers can cancel within 14 days and get a refund for any unused bundle value.
