WorldRemit is an online money transfer service started in London in 2010 by Ismail Ahmed, with co-founders Catherine Wines and Richard Igoe. It's now part of Zepz, the group that also owns Sendwave, and WorldRemit Ltd is authorised and regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority. It handles transfers to more than 130 countries.

It's built for people who regularly send money home or support relatives overseas, especially to countries where many people don't have a bank account. Everything is done on the website or the app. You choose the country and amount, see the fee and exchange rate upfront, and pay by bank transfer, debit card or credit card.

What's worth a look

Some of the most popular routes from the UK, each with its own page explaining how the money can be received.

How the money arrives depends on the country. Across most of these routes the options are a bank account, cash pickup at a partner location, or a mobile money wallet, and WorldRemit can also send airtime straight to a pre-paid phone. The person receiving the money doesn't need a WorldRemit account. The Nigeria page currently says naira transfers to bank accounts are fee-free.

Getting started takes a few steps. You sign up with your email address, verify your phone number with a one-time code and, if asked, upload photo ID and a selfie; WorldRemit says this takes up to four minutes in at least nine cases out of ten. Then you pick the country and receive method, enter the amount and the recipient's details, and pay. You get a notification with the transfer details straight away and can track it in the app. How much you can send depends on the country, the receive method and local rules. If something goes wrong, the app has live chat around the clock in six languages.

Current offers

We don't have any WorldRemit codes in our list. Its own site advertises an enhanced exchange rate on a new customer's first transfer, on selected routes and delivery methods only, once per person and with normal fees still applying. Separately, sending naira to bank accounts in Nigeria is fee-free.

How to save more

  • Pay by debit card or bank transfer. Credit card issuers can treat a transfer as a cash advance and add their own fee.
  • Use the currency converter before you send to see how the rate changes, and send larger amounts less often if fees are charged per transfer.
  • Get your ID ready before your first transfer. You may be asked for photo ID and a selfie, and having them to hand avoids delays.
