About Spokeo
Spokeo is an American people search service. You enter a name, email address, phone number or street address and it pulls together contact details, public records and social profiles from what it says are thousands of data sources. It also runs Spokeo Business and an API for companies that want to find customers or reduce fraud.
The company says it began in 2006 as a social network aggregator, moved into social search in 2008 and launched its people search engine in 2010. Its own figures put it at more than 12 billion records and around 500,000 searches a day. Basic searches are free to start, but full reports sit behind a paid membership. Spokeo is clear that it is not a consumer reporting agency, so it must not be used to make decisions about credit, employment or tenant screening.
For UK shoppers this is a US-focused product. The terms say you must be at least 18, and that you may not search for or submit information about people who live outside the United States. Memberships are prepaid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually and renew automatically; the site does not publish prices on the pages we read, so expect to see US dollar charges at sign-up. Payment is by credit card or PayPal. Support is by live chat, email or a US phone line.
