Bantu Chocolate is a small London brand with an unusual set-up: it grows its own cacao. Founder Veronique Mbida's family farms cocoa on an agroforestry estate outside Yaoundé in Cameroon, where the beans are harvested, fermented and dried before being turned into finished chocolate. Bantu says it pays its farm workers well above commodity and Fairtrade rates.

It suits anyone who reads the back of the wrapper. The bars have short ingredient lists, with no lecithin, dairy, gluten or soy. Bantu sells single bars, mini-bar selection boxes, a chocolate spread and drinks made from the parts of the cacao fruit that usually go to waste. Packaging is plastic-free, and orders ship around the UK within one to three working days.

What's worth a look

Single bars are £12, and the selection boxes and build-your-own box make good gifts.

The Noire 73% bar is the one to try first. It has just three ingredients: the estate's cacao, cocoa butter and organic coconut blossom sugar. For something different, Black Earl 60% is infused with bergamot and Earl Grey tea. The Build Your Own Chocolate Box lets you choose six, 12 or 24 bars from the Delta Equinox, Karnak Solstice and Philae Eclipse collections. Away from bars, Boocha is a kombucha made with cacao pulp, and Spread The Word is a palm-oil-free vegan chocolate spread.

Prices are higher than supermarket chocolate. What you're paying for is a traceable bar from a named estate, made in small batches. The selection boxes, at £29.80 for six mini bars, are the easiest way to try several flavours before settling on a favourite.

Current offers

There are no Bantu codes in our affiliate feed yet, but the shop has several ways to pay less:

  • Subscribe & save takes 15% off regular deliveries, weekly or monthly, and you can cancel at any time.
  • Refer a friend: they get 15% off their first order and you get a 15% code for your next one.
  • Delivery in Britain is free on orders over £28.
  • The site also offers 15% off when you sign up to its mailing list.

How to save more

  • Order one selection box at £29.80 rather than two single bars at £12 each. The box gets you free delivery, and the two bars don't.
  • If you have a favourite bar, compare the subscription price. Noire 73% is £12 as a one-off or £7.50 a month on subscription, and the selection boxes drop from £29.80 to £28 a month.
  • Thinking about Christmas gifts for colleagues or clients? Bantu takes corporate gifting and wholesale orders, so ask about a custom order rather than buying single boxes.
