borGO is a small tour operator based in Villamagna, in Abruzzo, a mountainous region of central Italy about two hours east of Rome. It sells slow travel. Instead of coach tours, its trips are led by local winemakers, guides, cooks and artisans in the hill villages most visitors drive past. Groups are usually two to ten people, every experience is available in English, and borGO says it puts 5% of each booking back into village projects.

It suits independent travellers, couples and families who are flying into Rome or Pescara and want a few days somewhere quieter, with food and walking at the centre of it. Prices are in euros and include VAT. Package prices are per person, based on two people sharing, and flights aren't included.

What's worth a look

Here's a mix of single experiences and short stays from borGO's site.

The Uncorked Villamagna tasting is a three-and-a-half-hour visit to a tiny wine appellation of about 85 hectares, with a wine brunch included. For something more active, the e-bike tour is a guided 35km loop through the Aterno valley, taking in Fontecchio's 14th-century fountain and two Roman bridges, with the e-bike included.

If you have longer, the packages start with a two-day food weekend in the Valle del Trigno from €203 per person, with an overnight stay and dinner with local producers. Sakra is one of the week-long signature journeys. It's based in Castel di Ieri and visits an Italic temple, a Franciscan abbey and rock-cut hermitages, from €2,500 per person.

The evening experience in Castel di Ieri is a good taster if you're staying nearby. It starts with local produce at Casa Morante, the family home of the grandfather of the writer Elsa Morante, then moves on to a guided night walk, a climb up the medieval tower and a visit to the Italic temple. Prices for single experiences are set when you choose a date in the booking calendar, so they weren't shown on the pages we checked.

Every package includes accommodation in village stays, agriturismi or small hotels, at least one experience with a local host, and a contact on the ground for the whole trip. Transfers from Rome or Pescara, train tickets and a private guide can be added on request. You pay in full by card when you book, through Stripe.

Current offers

We don't have any borGO codes or deals in our list right now, and we didn't find any public promotions on its site when we looked. The main way to save is to choose the length of trip that suits you. The shorter village packages cost a fraction of the signature journeys.

How to save more

  • Travel in late spring or autumn. borGO recommends May to June and September to October for walking, harvest festivals and uncrowded villages.
  • Package prices are per person based on two sharing, so ask for a quote for your actual group before you book.
  • Get in touch before booking to adapt an experience to your pace or group size, rather than adding extras later.
