Most of us have a box of VHS tapes somewhere, full of weddings, birthdays and school plays, and nothing left to play them on. Digitise Your Memories is a small UK business that converts them. It's run from Newcastle upon Tyne by P Phillips Ltd, and it says every tape is handled in-house rather than sent off to a third-party warehouse.

It keeps things simple by doing one format only: standard VHS tapes. You choose an MP4 digital download or a DVD, pay online and then get a prepaid postage label by email. Your tapes come back once they've been converted, and the shop says most orders are done within a few working days of arriving. It suits anyone who wants their family videos saved without buying a VCR and a capture device to do it themselves.

What's worth a look

The shop has two services, plus some useful free guides worth reading before you post anything.

VHS to Digital Conversion – MP4 Download is the one most people will want. You get an MP4 file for each tape through a secure download link, which plays on laptops, phones, tablets and most smart TVs and is easy to copy for relatives. VHS to DVD Conversion costs £1 more per tape and suits anyone who'd rather put a disc in a player. The shop's own MP4 vs DVD guide sets out the trade-offs plainly.

If you're nervous about posting tapes, the packing guide covers the basics: photograph and count them first, use a rigid box rather than a soft bag and cushion them so they can't move around.

How to save more

• Gather every tape from the family into one order, since 11 or more brings the price down to £8.99 a tape. Over 20, ask for a bulk quote, which starts from £8.49 a tape.
• Pick MP4 over DVD unless you specifically need discs; it's cheaper and you can make copies for everyone yourself.
• Check every tape is standard VHS before ordering, and note that you can cancel for a full refund at any point before posting.
