Hotel El Prado is one of the best-known buildings in Barranquilla, the port city on Colombia's Caribbean coast. Work started on it in 1927 and it opened in 1930, and it's been a listed monument of Colombia's architectural and cultural heritage since 1982. The hotel calls itself the first tourist hotel in Latin America, and its palm-ringed pool and long chequerboard-tiled corridors are a big part of the appeal.

It suits travellers who'd rather stay somewhere with a bit of history than in a new tower block, whether you're in Barranquilla for business, a wedding or Carnival. The hotel's own website is in Spanish, with a Google Translate link at the top for English, and prices are in Colombian pesos (COP).

What's worth a look

Here's a quick tour of what the hotel offers, as shown on its own site.

There are 206 rooms across three areas, Clásica, Ejecutiva and Cabaña. At the top end, the Grand Suite Clásica has two bedrooms, a king bed, a lounge and dining area and 116 square metres of space looking over the tropical gardens. There are also standard king and double queen rooms, rooms overlooking the pool and accessible rooms.

The services include a semi-Olympic pool open 8am to 9pm, a spa, a gym from 5am, a 24-hour business centre, laundry and parking. Of the restaurants and bars, La Pizzería del Prado is the family option, with a children's play area, and Bar Cayena opens on Friday and Saturday nights.

The hotel is also a big events venue. Its Gran salón, in the Clásica tower, seats up to 600 people theatre-style or 300 for a social event, and is decorated with stained-glass doors and four large chandeliers. Smaller rooms such as Salón Magdalena and Salón Real, plus three executive meeting rooms, cover anything from a board meeting to a wedding reception, and you can ask for a quote by WhatsApp from the site.

Current offers

We don't have any El Prado codes yet, but the hotel's Planes y Ofertas page lists these:

• Plan Pasadía day pass: COP 180,000 per adult and COP 150,000 per child aged 3 to 12, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, with use of the pool, a welcome drink and lunch. Taxes are included.
• Plan Cayena Silver at COP 479,451 and Plan Cayena Gold at COP 562,751, both including VAT. They're paid in full to book, non-refundable and not valid in high season or during city events.
• Live music with drinks promotions on Friday and Saturday nights.

How to save more

• Check the Planes y Ofertas page before booking, then use the promo code box in the hotel's own booking form.
• The Cayena packages are non-refundable and don't apply during Carnival or other city events, so only book them once your dates are fixed.
• Paying in pesos can mean foreign transaction fees, so use a card that doesn't charge them.
