Escape Tours takes the idea of an escape room outdoors. Rather than being shut in a room, your team follows a route through a real city, reads a story on one smartphone, solves puzzles and looks for small clues on buildings and statues, all to find the city's secret exit. There's no guide and no fixed start time. The game is run by Gamified Concepts BV from the Netherlands and now covers more than 200 cities, about 20 of them in the UK and Ireland.

It's a good fit for groups of friends, families with older children, couples looking for a different kind of date, hen and stag parties and work teams. The company says the puzzles and humour are aimed at adults and children aged 12 and up. A team ticket covers two to four people and is shown at £25.95 on the UK city pages.

What's worth a look

Each city has its own story and starting point. Here are six UK games, with the team price shown on each page.

In York you help Guy Fawkes get away after the Gunpowder Plot goes wrong, starting near York Castle Museum, while the London game is set in 1647 and follows the pickpocket Mary Frith, better known as Moll Cutpurse, through Westminster, Covent Garden and St James's. Edinburgh's story is built around Burke and Hare, Bath follows the gambler and dandy Beau Nash, and Manchester's sees Emmeline Pankhurst going into hiding in 1913.

You can race the two-hour clock for a place on the Wall of Fame, or play the relaxed version over up to 72 hours with one pause. After booking, the instructions and a login code arrive by email, and the code is valid for a year.

• The multi-city pass covers three cities for €59, five for €79 or eight for €99, which brings the cost down to €12.38 a game on the biggest pass. It's valid for two years, one team per city.
• Solve the short practice puzzle on the homepage and you get a €2.50 discount code for any city.
• Gift vouchers arrive by email as a printable PDF and are valid for two years, so the recipient can choose the city.

How to save more

• Fill your team. One ticket covers up to four people, so a full team of four pays under £6.50 each.
• If you're likely to play on more than one trip, the multi-city pass works out cheaper per game than single tickets.
• Book when you're sure of your plans. Bookings can't be refunded, though you have a year to use the code.
