Maplin: the electronics name back online, from cables to cameras

Maplin was a high street name for decades, the place you went for a cable, a battery or a bag of components. The shops closed in 2018, but the brand came back as an online-only electronics shop in 2019, and it now sells everything from power banks and plug-in solar kits to security cameras, instant cameras, dash cams and a very wide choice of cables and adapters. It suits anyone sorting out a home setup, replacing a lost lead or buying a gadget as a present, and it's handy if you'd rather buy the bits for a job in one place.

Alongside big brands such as Swann and Fujifilm, Maplin puts together its own tech kits, which bundle the leads and adapters you need for a particular task, such as getting an old console or DVD player working with a modern TV. The Retro Gaming Converter Kit, for example, pairs an RCA-to-HDMI upscaler with the cables and a USB wall charger to power it.

What's worth a look

A few things from Maplin's range, with the prices shown on its site when we checked.

The Swann Evo 2K Pan & Tilt WiFi Camera is reduced to £39.99 from £49.99, a sensible way to keep an eye on a room or a pet without wiring anything in. If you've got an old games console or VCR in the loft, the Maplin SCART to HDMI Adapter at £12.99 is the kind of small part Maplin has always been good for.

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 13 in Lagoon Green is £79.99 and makes an easy present, especially as buying it unlocks money off batteries and film. For power cuts, camping or the garden shed, the PPT Portable Solar Charging Kit at £157.22 is one of Maplin's own bundles for charging away from the mains. Trade buyers and hobbyists after components, connectors, enclosures and tools can use the separate Maplin Pro site.

Current offers

Maplin's offers page mixes straightforward reductions with add-on deals. When we looked, these included:

• Sale prices on Swann security cameras and CCTV kits, smart lighting and some of Maplin's own tech kits.
• Multibuy cables, with two selected cables for £15 or £20, and multibuy prices on Maplin batteries.
• 30% off standard packs of Maplin AA High Performance batteries when you buy a Fujifilm Instax Mini 13, and 10% off selected Instax film with an Instax camera or printer.
• 10% off for students, graduates and under-26s, verified through gocertify on Maplin's student discount page.

How to save more

• Standard delivery on small items is £3.49, but it's free on most small items over £35, so it can pay to add the cable or batteries you'll need anyway.
• Look for the add-on discounts on product and basket pages: several cameras, power banks and chargers unlock money off matching cables, film or batteries.
• Check what you're buying works with your kit before you order, because Maplin takes the return postage off your refund if you send something back just because you changed your mind.
