refurbed is an online marketplace for refurbished products, set up in Vienna in 2017 by Peter Windischhofer, Kilian Kaminski and Jürgen Riedl. It doesn't refurbish devices itself. Instead, professional refurbishers across Europe sell through the site, and refurbed sets the rules on testing, warranty and returns. It now runs in 24 European markets, including the UK, and makes a point of the environmental side too, saying that refurbishing a device avoids most of the CO₂ emissions of making a new one.

It suits anyone who wants a recent iPhone, MacBook or console without paying the new price, and who'd rather have a warranty than take a chance on a private sale. Phones and laptops are the main event, but there are also tablets, smartwatches, headphones, cameras, kitchen appliances and even guitars. On each listing you choose a cosmetic grade, from Premium down to Good, and the price changes to match. Unless stated otherwise, phone batteries have at least 85% of their original capacity.

What's worth a look

Here are six popular devices, with the starting price shown for the default grade and storage on refurbed's UK site in late October.

The iPhone 15 is a sensible middle ground if you want USB-C and a modern camera without paying for the latest model. If you're after a laptop, the MacBook Air with the M2 chip is listed with a choice of RAM, storage and battery options, including a new battery fitted by the seller. Note that prices shift as stock changes, and some listings show as almost sold out.

Each listing shows the price next to the new price, and the gap varies a lot. When we checked, the Nintendo Switch 2 and the iPad 10 were only a few pounds cheaper than new, while older flagships such as the Galaxy S21 showed much bigger savings. So refurbished isn't automatically the cheapest option for very recent devices, and it's worth comparing before you buy.

Current offers

  • £15 off when you sign up to refurbed's newsletter for the first time.
  • Delivery is included in every price, and returns are free.
  • App-only vouchers in the refurbed app for iOS and Android.
  • refurbed says you can save up to 70% compared with buying new, depending on the product and grade.

How to save more

  • Try the next grade down. A Very good or Good device works the same as a Premium one but may show light marks, and it's usually cheaper.
  • Sell your old phone through refurbed's Sell service and put the money towards your new one.
  • Use the full 30-day trial to check the battery, screen and buttons. If anything's wrong, the return label is free.
