Spicers of Hythe started life as Percy Spicer's grocery shop on Stade Street in Hythe, Kent, which opened in February 1926. Percy packed Christmas hampers for his customers in the cellar, and hampers are still the whole business today. It's now run from a large warehouse in Gateshead, where the customer service team also sits, and it says it sends more than 175,000 hampers a year.

It suits anyone who wants to send food and drink rather than wrap something themselves: a Christmas thank you for a neighbour, a birthday gift for a parent who lives miles away, or a client list of fifty. Every gift can carry a free personal message, you can send to several addresses in one order, and you choose the delivery date at checkout. There are wine, fizz, cheese, chocolate, alcohol-free, gluten-free and vegan-friendly ranges, and you can shop by budget from under £25 upwards.

The Redsleeves is a good middle-ground Christmas box: a Chilean Merlot Carmenère, mince pies, popcorn, ginger oat crumbles, truffles and Christmas jam in a festive gift box. If you need to avoid alcohol, the alcohol-free Fireside Feast fills a dark wicker basket with fudge, nuts, biscuits, cheese wafers, mince pies and fruit jellies instead.

How to save more

• Use the price filters on the Christmas hampers page to find gifts under £30 or £50; smaller gift boxes and bottle-and-treat sets cost much less than the big baskets.
• Check the delivery address carefully. Hampers can't be returned once sent, and a failed delivery because of a wrong address means paying again to resend.
