About Volotea
Volotea is a low-cost airline based in Barcelona, founded in 2011 by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros, with its first flight on 5 April 2012. It flies an all-Airbus fleet of A319 and A320 aircraft and says it serves more than 430 routes across over 110 cities in 17 countries, with more than half of those routes exclusive to it. It reports 80 million passengers carried by December 2025.
Its focus is direct flights between smaller and mid-sized European cities, often avoiding big hubs, with bases in places such as Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse, Venice, Verona, Naples and Palermo. It suits shoppers happy to travel with a small bag, since the standard fare includes only a small under-seat bag. A 10 kg cabin bag costs €65 per flight unless bought with Priority Boarding, from €9, or through the Megavolotea membership.
Prices on the site are shown in euros, so UK travellers should expect card conversion. Checked bags of 10, 20 or 25 kg are cheapest added online from €9, €14 and €19, rising at check-in and at the gate. The optional Flex plan allows unlimited changes up to four hours before departure without the €50 change fee, though you still pay any fare difference, and cancellations are refunded as Volotea credit.
