If you're putting the tree up early this year, you don't have to spend much. We checked B&Q, Dunelm, Aldi and Lidl when we checked on 1 November. B&Q has artificial trees from £12 and LED lights from £2, and both Aldi and Lidl have new festive ranges in stores. Most of these prices are everyday prices rather than reductions, but they're low.

At a glance

  • B&Q: 6ft Wintergreen Wrapped Full Artificial Christmas tree for £20, and 20 warm white LED string lights with a timer for £2. It also had "up to 15% off selected Christmas".
  • Dunelm: a pack of 30 mixed size shatterproof baubles for £8, and a 7ft Western Pine Christmas Tree for £69.
  • Aldi: Lights & Decorations Specialbuys from £2.79, in store while stocks last.
  • Lidl: Christmas lighting and Christmas décor from Thursday 5 November, and more décor from Sunday 8 November.
  • Matalan: 3 for 2 on Christmas decorations and wrapping, with no end date shown.

B&Q: trees and lights

B&Q's Christmas page was running "Up to 15% off selected christmas" alongside its Black Friday sale. It didn't show was prices, so we can't say which of these items are reduced. Prices included:

  • 4ft Wintergreen Wrapped Full Artificial Christmas tree: £12
  • 6ft Wintergreen Wrapped Full Artificial Christmas tree: £20
  • 7ft Wintergreen Wrapped Full Artificial Christmas tree: £35
  • 6ft Prancer Natural effect Hinged Full Artificial Christmas tree: £35
  • 7ft Prancer Natural effect Hinged Full Artificial Christmas tree: £45
  • 20 warm white LED string lights with timer: £2
  • 50 warm white LED string lights with timer: £3
  • Gold effect star Christmas tree topper: £3
  • 5.49m pre-lit battery-powered garland: £10

Click + Collect is free. Home delivery on B&Q's own stock is £6, or free over £100.

Dunelm: baubles, lights and wreaths

Dunelm's prices are everyday prices, not reductions. A pack of 30 mixed size shatterproof baubles is £8, handy if you have pets or toddlers. Its Santa 20 LED String Lights are £2.50, Holly Leaves 20 LED String Lights are £4 and 40 LED Star Curtain Lights are £15.

For the door, a 55cm pre-lit artificial berry wreath with bow is £25. Its 3ft pre-lit multicoloured tinsel tree is £18, and a Gold Winged Fairy Tree Topper is £8. Delivery is £3.95, or free over £60, and Click & Collect is free.

Aldi and Lidl

Aldi's Lights & Decorations Specialbuys went on sale on 29 October and are sold while stocks last. They include LED Christmas String Lights at £2.99, a Tinsel Wreath/Tree at £2.99, a Window Suction Light at £3.49, a Wooden Nutcracker at £4.99, an LED Twig Tree at £16.99, an XXL Light Wreath at £14.99 and a Christmas Inflatable at £19.99. Aldi's Cards & Wrap range follows on Sunday 8 November.

Lidl's website lists Christmas Lighting and Christmas Décor from Thursday 5 November, and more Christmas décor from Sunday 8 November. It didn't show prices online, so check your local store.

Worked example: a full tree for £34

  • B&Q 6ft Wintergreen artificial tree: £20
  • Dunelm 30 shatterproof baubles: £8
  • B&Q 50 warm white LED lights with timer: £3
  • B&Q gold effect star topper: £3

That's £34 if you collect from both shops for free. An artificial tree can be used year after year. LED lights are also cheap to run. For example, a 5W set left on for six hours a day for 40 days uses 1.2kWh, about 32p at Ofgem's average electricity price of 26.32p per kWh for October to December 2026.

Stay safe with lights

Electrical Safety First advises buying lights from a reputable retailer rather than a third-party online seller. Check old sets for damage and loose wires before you use them, and plug outdoor lights into a socket protected by a 30mA RCD.

What to do now

  1. Check what you already have in the loft, and test old lights before you buy new ones.
  2. Measure the space, including ceiling height, before choosing a tree.
  3. Collect in store to save on delivery.
  4. Go early for Aldi and Lidl ranges, as Specialbuys sell out.
  5. Choose lights with a timer so they don't stay on all night.

Questions

Are these prices cheaper than last year?

We can't say. Most shops didn't show was prices, so treat these as current prices rather than reductions.

Is a pre-lit tree worth it?

It saves time, but if one section of lights fails, it can be harder to fix. A plain tree with separate lights is cheaper to repair.

Will decorations be cheaper on Black Friday?

Possibly, but popular trees sell out. Decorations are usually cheapest after Christmas, if you can wait for next year.
