Barron Beds is a small bed maker in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, that builds its beds to order and sells them straight to customers rather than through furniture chains. The company behind it, Barron Furniture Ltd, has its workshop at Providence Mills, and the team says it has more than ten years in the bed trade. Most of the designs are its own, and it warns shoppers about other sellers using its photos.

The focus is upholstered bed frames with a bit of drama: tall wingbacks, scroll sleigh beds, Chesterfield buttoning, Art Deco panels and a low, squashy boucle bed. Most come in plush velvet or similar fabrics, with a choice of slatted base, divan drawers or an ottoman gas-lift if you want storage underneath. There are also headboards on their own, ottoman boxes, footstools and pouffes, and three mattress ranges called Baroness, Duchess and Sultan.

It suits anyone who wants a statement bed without paying showroom prices, and who's happy to wait a couple of weeks for it to be made. Delivery takes 5 to 14 working days, and the team rings or texts a day or two ahead to book a slot.

The Cloud Low Bed Frame is the one Barron calls its best seller: a deep, cushioned boucle bed with an 86cm adjustable headboard, at £690. For something more traditional, the Maya Wingback has deep buttoning and double beading and was down to £299.99 from £329.99. The price on each page is a starting point, so check the total once you've picked a size, fabric and base.

How to save more

• Check your postcode against the delivery page before you order. Parts of Scotland, Kent, Sussex, the South West and Wales pay extra, and some areas aren't covered at all.
• Look for the Sale badges on the homepage and in the bed collections. Several frames were reduced by £20 to £80 when we looked.
• Use the 48-hour cooling-off period to check every detail. After that the bed goes into production and cancelling can cost up to 30% of the order, as the returns page explains.
