htophotels is a family-owned Catalan chain that has been in the hotel business for more than 50 years. Its hotels line the coast north and south of Barcelona: the Costa Brava (Platja d'Aro and Lloret de Mar), the Costa Barcelona-Maresme (Calella, Pineda de Mar, Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar) and the Costa Daurada at Salou, plus a city hotel in Barcelona. Most are beach hotels with an all-inclusive option, and the chain's motto is "happiness included".

The hotels come in three ranges. #htopBliss covers the quieter, more upmarket hotels with sea views, including two adults-only hotels. #htopFun is four-star family hotels with kids' clubs, splash parks and evening shows, and #htopEnjoy is central three-star hotels close to restaurants and nightlife. Prices are in euros and appear in the booking engine once you choose dates, and there's a UK phone number for new bookings.

What's worth a look

Six hotels show the range, from adults-only to city break.

Couples should look at htop Pineda Palace, a four-star superior adults-only (18+) hotel on the seafront at Pineda de Mar, with 194 rooms, a private mini spa and an all-inclusive option. Families with more than two children will find suites for up to six at htop Royal Sun Suites in Santa Susanna, which is also pet-friendly. For a theme-park holiday, htop Molinos Park in Salou is all-inclusive, less than 500 metres from the beach and close to PortAventura World.

Current offers

Halloween brings costume parties, pumpkin carving and trick-or-treat trails at the family hotels (Platja Park, Amatista, Olympic and Jhade), plus an adults-only Halloween programme at htop Amaika in Calella. Booking on htophotels.com also comes with a welcome cocktail or glass of cava, free cancellation up to 48 hours before arrival on the Flexible Rate, payment at the hotel on that rate, and the chain's promise of the best rooms for direct bookers.

How to save more

• If your dates are fixed, the non-refundable rate is cheaper, and it still lets you change your dates, guests or even hotel as often as you like up to 7 days before arrival.
• Prepay up to two days before you arrive by emailing [email protected]. You keep your cancellation terms, check in faster and get a welcome gift.
• Budget for extras. Tourist tax isn't included in the price, and at check-in you'll need to register a card or leave a €100 cash deposit per room.
